Dear People

After months and months of work, we’re now launching a new system – the Worldwide Permaculture Network (WPN) - which will enable permaculturists everywhere to:

- Put themselves on a clickable map, where people (permaculturists and non-permaculturists) can see at a glance the scope of the spread of permaculture worldwide
- Showcase their work as individuals, and the work of any projects they are administrating
- Be searchable according to many variables (climate zone, project type, and more)
- Network with other permaculturists everywhere
- Advertise their consultancy services
- Advertise their courses (for educational projects)
- Share knowledge, experiences, challenges, successes, and inspiration
- Help inspire non-permaculturists with the potential for positive, systemic change that permaculture design systems can bring
- And more...

Background:

I conjured the idea of this database more than two and a half years ago, and with the support of PRI Australia we’ve been trying to squirrel away finances to build it ever since. Whilst saving our pennies, I’ve had a static HTML project listing up in the interim, but it was always a cumbersome way to display and promote projects of course and over the last several months as I’ve been working on this database, I’ve had to neglect that section entirely.

With this new system you can create your own user profile, and, if applicable, advertise your status as a consultant and/or aid worker. You can add your project(s), of whatever type, be it an urban residential project, or an African or Californian aid project, a Sydney or Delhi suburbs commercial project or something not even land based – like an economic project (LETS, or similar), or a political activist project, and more. Educational projects get to list their courses.

By adding a profile (People and Projects), you get added to an interactive world map! You can browse projects by their summary cards and filter by climate zone or project type – or just by clicking on the pins on the map. You can find ‘People’ by different criteria also – climate zone, consultants, aid workers, teachers, etc.

You get your own blog with your profile, and if you’re sharing interesting and valuable updates to your blog you’ll find other users clicking to ‘follow’ you so they can easily monitor your updates via their ‘dashboard’ – where you arrive after logging in. The best updates will be ‘featured’, thus attracting more followers and potentially supporters of your work (including attracting more students, and/or consultancy customers, etc.).

A Plea

Despite being created by the PRI, these features are available to anyone who wishes to make use of them.

Because of my work over the last five years, studying world issues and writing about them, I am acutely aware of the more-than-precarious situation we are in as a race. I have created the WPN as a tool to help fast-track the take-up of permaculture design concepts to help ameliorate our predicament as rapidly as possible. The WPN system has enormous potential if we make use of it in the way designed – i.e. using it to share information, resources, inspiration and encouragement. In addition, the WPN can, if it receives community-funded support for the costs involved, continue its development to tailor/improve it to meet the needs of users. At present we at the PRI have diverted funds to create this system from our own urgent need to expand and improve facilities for students and from other projects that needed it, but we’ve done so in the belief that the WPN has such a potential, and that time is so short, that if we didn’t go ahead and initiate such a much-needed project, then as economies continue to collapse we might never see such a system getting created at all.

It would be great if we can all build on our common shared vision, and I offer up this system as a tool to help accomplish this. Your feedback and support to improve will be welcome, and acted upon as we have time and means to do so.

The time is now!

As architect of this system, I warmly invite you to go to www.permacultureglobal.com , and sign up. After signing up, please ensure you complete your personal profile and pretty it up as a good example for subsequent users to emulate. Then, add your project if you have one (it might be your own residential yard, or a project involving many more people, like a permaculture local group, or other, etc.), also ensuring to maintain a high standard of textual content, formatting and a good sprinkling of nice images, etc., so we can ensure people investigating permaculture for the first time are wowed with what they find in the system.

Permaculturists – this is our time! Let’s stop considering permaculture as an ‘alternative lifestyle’ and accept the fact that there really is *no alternative*. As far as our place in history, it’s permaculture or bust. We need to come out of our closets, and recognise that it’s the time to share and nurture, to build community, share seeds and designs, share enthusiasm and wisdom, and practical knowhow. The WPN will facilitate this like no other system available today. I have laboured in the hope that you will make best use of this system.

Thank you everybody for all that you do in the world.

Sincerely

Would it be to much trouble to list USA as North America? or even adding it as another option? There is a major dispute over the legality of the Corporate Logo known as "United States of America". Seems there is a difference between an American citizen and a United States Citizen recognized by the United States Supreme Court system. *NOTE to anyone wishing to dispute* I will not get into a Legal debate over this cause it is a long and drawn out process and I'm not in the mood. I as well as many Sovereign do consider ourselves American by birth, we do not acknowledge nor accept the current ruling regime as legal. Your personal messages are turned off so this is the only way to correspond with you on this matter. If you have any further questions for a better understanding of this please feel free to ask -via- personal messages as I don't feel this situation is appropriate for discussion on the Permi website.

Now that you've got that done, Craig, can you do something about the Spam issues on the forum... we are tackling at least 100 spam posts per day - for at least the past month...

The board is not running on the latest version, something has happened to cause spammers to bypass the sign-up security settings.

No - he's not allowed to! It is consuming HOURS of time daily for each of us mods to keep this board clean and functioning under the onslaught. Seriously. I really do have better things to do than defend the world from nefarious porn!

BTW - congrats Craig. I can see it has been a labour of love for you. I hope that the realisation of it as you set it free into the world is everything that you have hoped for.

Great stuff Craig, and thank you!

I've just signed up. I'll add my project and see if people think what I do qualifies as permaculture  - I'm a pretty harsh personal critic. I'm gonna do my best to be brutally honest about my strengths and short-comings - it can be confronting to have a good hard look at yourself and open it up for all to see.

I feel inclined to add an acronum - WUTY (wake up to yourself) but said most respectfully. Or GYAB (Give yourself a break)

I am not sure how you guys can get time for the forum I have been on the new site and on landshare every spare moment.

Well done Graig

Well, I don't have the time really but it is too stinking hot outside right now and it has sapped my will. I can see myself spending more time on the new site and much less here too. See you there PP

It's raining here so I've got an excuse for being online too ;-) What's landshare?

Why is everyone writing their intro on the WPN in the third person?

Grahame saw what all the other people were doing and decided he would follow the crowd. He thought it seemed more professional like.

Grahame may now type in the 3rd person in all forums.

The new site is more geared towards social interaction between qualified permies, the number of people who visit this forum who are simply implementing some green or permaculture approaches to their home environment without a formal permaculture title will perhaps feel overwhelmed or lost in a room full of qualified professionals at the New Site.

I think this forum will always have a place... at least I hope it does, i'm not in a position to do a formal PDC yet and I have learnt / am learning a lot from the folks here.

Well, if that's the case then surely it is already sunk!? - Things will just stay as they are and it won't save the world...

That made me feel kinda sad Eric - perhaps you tapped into my own insecurity.

I think it's up to the non-PDC crowd to get onto the site and have a presence too. After all they did change the original premise of PDC grads only to include us, so we may as well make the most of it. Besides, I wouldn't stop myself from talking to PDC grads if I was in the pub or at a meeting just because I don't have one ;-)

Pebble wonders what kind of biscuits Grahame likes.

The folks at Purple Pear are very jealous of you rain pebble.
I had not noticed the tendancy on the WPN but will be looking when I go back.
SAO says we.
I hope there is ample opportunity for all on the site and please consider my Mandala Market Garden Group in landshare too - love to see you there.

We are blessed with rain in the right quantity this year. Doesn't happen like this often.

I don't know what 'landshare' is. Is that a website?

Pebble it's a series of sites for different parts of the world connecting growers with people who have land to share.

Here's an example https://www.landshare.net/

Craig,

Excellent work on the WPN ! Well done.

It's really good to feel part of a world where people share the same ideas.
