What is homesteading, and why does it matter today?

For me Homesteading is acquiring a piece of land and creating a place that provides me most all of my food needs in a totally sustainable way. My own animals such as; hogs and goats or sheep (perhaps both) for meat, wool and milk, eggs from chickens, ducks and guinea fowl. My own all naturally fed gardens for vegetables and fruits. Solar panels and wind generators for my own power without need of an electrical grid, wood for winter heat and cooking.

In the old days a person who homesteaded had to do everything for their survival and be able to repeat those things year after year, the same goes for today or you aren't really homesteading.
