    Is there an article anywhere on Permaculture News that factors in all of what you’ve written above, AND the cost of the materials used to make solar panels, batteries, etc? I completely agree that solar energy is renewable and free, but I wonder about the costs (not just monetary costs but to the environments and communities involved) of the materials needed to make the tools to harvest the solar energy? If its ALL laid out on the table, does solar still stack up as better?

    I’m not saying we should keep burning coal and oil by any means, but I DO think we need to see and discuss the WHOLE picture of solar energy or any other alternative energy source.

    I don’t know enough to comment much further than this, but my limited understanding is that the making of solar panels carries the social and environmental costs of the mining of yet more finite materials, and that solar panels are not that easy to recycle/reuse at the end of their lifetime? Please correct me if I’m wrong on any of this.

    I fear that promoting solar energy as the solution to our climate problem without carefully unpacking every aspect of it might prompt people to think they can keep living the same lavish, energy-hungry lifestyles and just switch to alternative energy sources to make it all okay.
